Card-Not-Present Transactions (CNP)

A Card-Not-Present (CNP) transaction is a retail spend transaction where the cardholder is not physically present at the merchant’s location when the payment is made.

Payment types are split up into two categories – card-present transactions (CP) and card-not-present (CNP) transactions. The differences between these two types of payments are more important than many retailers realize, and the ones you choose to accept could have a big impact on your business.

A card-not-present transaction (CNP, mail order / telephone order, MO/TO) is a payment card transaction made where the cardholder does not or cannot physically present the card for a merchant's visual examination at the time that an order is given and payment effected.

Card-present transactions are in-person, while card-not-present transactions are not in-person. Instead of using only the physical location to determine which transaction type is used, it's better to identify how the card is processed.
